Recent Initiatives of the Outreach Committee:
Stand Against Poverty  We joined a global movement of the same name and encouraged the congregation to take a stand, during worship, as we read out a declaration decrying the on-going shame of radical poverty in a world of abundance.
Petitions Against Federal Cuts to Kairos Funding  Outraged by a recent decision by the Federal Government to cut core funding for KAIROS, an ecumenical social justice and human rights organization, we joined our voices to those across the nation protesting the cuts.  In St John's we organized a petition and publicized it so that all citizens, whether faith-based or not, could declare their commitment to Canada's international role as a long-term investor in grassroots development.
Partnering with the Dorcas Widows of Uganda to sell their hand made paper beads.  They create these beads to support themselves and their grandchildren.  Many are HIV positive, and some have AIDS.  All are destitute, and are using the little money raised by the beads to purchase land, where they will build homes, as none have permanent residences.  See the Photo Album for pictures from Uganda.
Peace Dove Cookies offered for donations to the United for Peace Campaign after church, over $300.00 raised for peace initiatives in Israel/Palestine and other locations (with help from the Youth Group)
Hosting the Association for New Canadians to a conversation evenings provided by members of the congregation, with conversation and also crafts by the Sunday School.  See the Photo Album for shots from last spring's meal.

Coordinated Seven Disaster Relief Breakfasts for earthquake victims in Myanmar/Burma and China.  With great publicity and lots of media support we energized a drive to serve muffins, coffee/tea and yogurt for donations... over $24,000 was raised in 7 locations.  See the Photo Album for pix.

“We are committed to following Christ’s example of reaching out to each other and to other peoples in the spirit of peace, compassion and justice.” (Gower’s Mission Statement)

The Outreach Committee of Gower strives to fulfill the mission of our congregation through identifying and addressing issues and needs in our church family, neighborhood, country and the world.

Our local initiatives include our support of the Stella Burry Community Services, Bridges To Hope Food Aid Center, and the Association of New Canadians – all located and serving in our church neighborhood. From time to time, we are called to help individuals and families in times of crisis.

Through our generous gifts to the Mission & Service Fund we are working each year with national and global partners - social agencies, other churches and other faith groups- in responding to emergencies and offering everyday necessities to peoples around the world.
In an effort to seek justice in the marketplace, the Outreach Committee promotes Fair Trade Coffee. This endeavor allows us to provide the coffee served after church each Sunday and to raise awareness of global trade injustices.
We are part of the national United for Peace Campaign, which is
striving to raise awareness and funds to promote peace initiatives in Palestine/Israel as well as other places around the world.

At our monthly meetings we strive to identify new ways to reach out and fulfill the Mission Statement of our congregation. Our Committee is one of many in our congregation with the same mandate to fulfill our Creed:  “We are called to love and serve others, to live with respect in creation, to seek justice and resist evil…..”
